Notes - Elias N. Chamberlain's nephew William F. Bulmer was employed as fireman in the Dover gas works, where he was killed by gas fumes on November 17, 1904. It was said that a pipe in the pit was leaking and that young Bulmer discovered it and went down in the pit to repair the break and at once fell unconscious, when his Uncle Elias N. Chamberlain, in trying to rescue him, also fell overcome by gas. Then two painters also went down to their deaths in trying to rescue Chamberlain and Bulmer. All efforts to revive the men proved futile.
William F. Bulmer graduated at the Clinton, NJ High School at the age of sixteen, and was a good, bright and brave young man.
